Wild Horses of Cumberland Island was commissioned by the Hopewell Middle School Symphonic Band in Milton, Georgia, Audrey Murphy, director, for the opening of their performance at the 2019 Georgia Music Educator Association's In Service Conference at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. The is a nod to the school's mascot, the Mustangs, and the horses that run free at Cumberland Island off of the coast of south Georgia where the composer visited during her youth.
